What I got for Christmas

I really wanted to somehow make a haul of what I got for Christmas but I couldn't think of a good way to do that, especially since my camera isn't working for some reason. I decided to make a you tube video. If you like it, please give it a thumbs up or let me know in the comments.

What did you think?

Outfit: Ugly Christmas Sweater

Notice that lack of snow outside... yeah it's horrible.

I am so excited for Christmas that I am counting downs the days (4 in case you were wondering)! One of my favorite things about this season is the ugly Christmas sweaters. They are so fun and cute that I think everyone should have one in their closet. This one is especially nice because it is super thick and warm, so even though it is unseasonably warm where I live, it's still something nice to cuddle up in. I am planning on wearing this to school on Tuesday for our Christmas pep rally, although I might add shoes to it because being only in socks is frowned upon.

Gingerbread Cookies

It's finally the time of year wear you can make cookies everyday, and eat as much as you want without feeling bad! My family has made over 4 types of cookies this week. I am going to share with all of you my favorite cookie, Gingerbread Cookies! I love these because they just taste like the holidays (if that's even a thing)! This was the first gingerbread my mom had when she was young, while she was in Williamsburg VA. My grandma got the recipe for her and my family has been making these every year since.

Gingerbread Cookies

Ingredients:
cookies:
1 cup granulated white sugar
2 tsp ginger
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 baking soda
1 cup butter softened
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 cup molasses
3/4 tsp vanilla extract
4 cups white wheat flour

Directions:
Combine the sugar, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt and baking soda. Mix well.

Add the butter, evaporated milk, and molasses, and vanilla. Mix well. Add the flour 1 cup at a time. The dough should be stiff enough to handle without sticking to fingers. Kneed the dough for a smoother texture.

Ass additional flour to prevent sticking. Put the dough in the refrigerator so it is easier to roll out.

Roll dough out 1/4" thick on floured surface and cut into cookies.

Bake for 8-10 min at 375 degrees.

When cookies are cool, frost.

Frosting
Ingredients:
1 lb (2 cups) powdered sugar
1/2 cup softened butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 Tbs. milk

Directions:
Mix all ingredients together.

The finished product! Don't they look great!

What is your favorite type of cookie?

Christmas Wishlist

Instead of doing a December wish-list this month I thought I would change it up and share with you some of the top things on my Christmas list. This isn't everything i'm asking for, but I always go by the rule if there's more on the list, the less likely you are to know what you're getting. I hate figuring out what i'm getting ahead of time so this helps me keep that to a minimum. This year I am asking for a variety of things, which will make getting everything so much more fun! So with that, here is my 2015 Christmas list!

Hunter Boots: I really want these boots in black. I think they are super cute, and now that it is going to be snowy for a long time, it would be a good thing to have some water proof shoes. I already know so many different outfits that would look adorable with these and I just can't wait!

Patagonia Re-Snap Pullover: I think I want this pullover in red or pink, but either way all I know is that really want it. I have a deep love for pull overs and quarter zips so I know this would be worn all of the time.

Victoria's Secret PJ set: I think Pajama sets are one of the cuter things in life, so I want a set or two from Victoria's Secret. My favorite patterns are Red/Green Plaid and Red/White Dot. I just think that waking up in warm flannel pajamas is a good way to start any day, even a Monday.

Nixon Watch: I have been wanting a classic looking watch for quite a while now and I think that I may have found the perfect one. This is a super simple looking watch but it would go with a lot and would be a nice addition to any outfit.

Kate Spade Stationary: It's really hard to go wrong when you are looking at Kate Spade things and this stationary is no exception. I just love the idea of being able to write really cute thank you notes to people, and to hopefully get one back in return.

Moccasin Slippers: I honestly don't know why I don't have a pair of slippers already since I live in a cold place, but I don't so here's the solution. These L.L. Bean slippers look like they would be extremely soft. They would be perfect for me to slip on in the mornings and to wear on the wonderful snow days.

I absolutely love reading other peoples Christmas lists so if you wrote a post on your list, or read a really good one, please let me know!
Anything special on your Christmas list?

Oh My Apple Pie

Hey guys so I thought it would be fun to have a guest blogger post this week so here is a recipes from the The French Bread Girl. This is my mom's blog and she loves to post really good recipes, so if you ever want something to make, this should be your go to. This post is about her apple pie which is one of my all time favorite desserts that she makes. Please comment if you want more types of posts like this (food, guests etc...) and go check out the The French Bread Girl blog!

**********************************************
Apple pie is one of my favorite types of pie. Last weekend I purchased the last of the local apples, about 1 bushel worth.  I know I'll be making apple desserts, sauce and baked apples for the next month or so.  I don't remember where I got  this recipe for apple pie but it is a family favorite.  I like to use a combination of Macintosh and Cortland apples, but you can use what you have on hand. I won't lie for this pie in the picture I used the Pillsbury roll out crust.  When I do have time I like to make a homemade crust, but that really wasn't in the cards last weekend.  If you like to have a double crust pie don't make my butter and sugar topping.  Enjoy the recipe below or just be inspired to play in your kitchen and make some delicious treats for fall.

Pie filling and the 2 1/2 bushels in the background.

right out of the oven

For the Filling:
Peel and slice 7 large apples.  Combine the apples with 1/3 c sugar, 1/4 c AP flour, 1 tsp lemon juice, 2 tsp vanilla extract and spices to taste. (cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice)

Add the apple mixture to the crust.

For the topping:
Combine 1 cup AP flour, 1/2 cup sugar and a combination of the same spices listed above or none at all.  Add 1/4 tsp salt.  Mix all together and add 6 T of butter cut into bits.  I like to combine the mixture with my hands until it becomes small pea sized bits.  Add on top of the apples.

Bake for 20 minutes at 450 degrees and then reduce to 350 degrees and continue cooking for 35-40 minutes.

Bon Appétit!

Tie Blankets

As the Christmas season is approaching I thought id share with you my favorite handmade Christmas gift to give....Tie Blankets! They are super easy to make, and if you buy with the right sales, super cheap as well. People love getting tie-blankets because it shows time and energy put into making the gift, which makes it even more valuable.

Supplies:
You only need three things: scissors, two types of fleece and your hands. The most standard thing when choosing fleece, is to pick one solid color and one patterned color. Almost any craft or fabric store will have fleece. The fleece can be about 2-2 1/2 yards long. The longer the fleece the bigger the blanket. Also, another note with the scissors is that make sure to use sharper scissors because fleece can be hard to cut sometimes.

Step 1:
Lay the fleeces on top of each other, making sure that the corners match up.

Step 2:
Cut off any excess fabric that would make the fleece not line up.

Step 3:
Cut off the corners with about 3-4 inch sides. The length just depends on how long you want the fringe to be. These squares help make the corners curve the right way.

Step 4:
Cut lines into the fleece. The lines should be as long as the corner you cut out, and they should be about 1-2 inches apart. This will make the fringe of the blanket. I like to fold over every other section because it makes it easier to see if you are cutting in a straight line and it will also help later on with tying fringe.

Step 5:
Tie the fringe by taking the top and bottom part of each section and tying it like you would start to tie your shoes. Do this twice for each section. I like to try and make the solid part of the fringe face the patterned part of the blanket.

Volia! You have just made a beautiful tie blanket that someone would love to have.

Weekend Uniform

This fall I have found myself wearing almost the same thing every weekend. Jeans and a crew neck sweatshirt. After trying to look nice every day of the week, it is just nice to slip into something warm and comfortable. I love crew necks because they can be so many different things, like for colleges or sports, or can have funny pictures on them or a pattern. I wear this so often that I have started referring to it as my weekend uniform.

November Favorites

Old Navy Flannel Scarf: I want plaid scarf so badly! They so are cute and just add a little more to every outfit without being insane. This one really comfortable. I know that by being flannel it will be so warm and cozy. I can just see all types of different outfits that I could make with this scarf.

Great Lakes Clothing Company Long Sleeve: oops.. I just bought this. So I guess it can't really be on list but I can say, I want another. These shirts i would say are better than Vineyard Vines. There fabric is heavier, but still has the same softness that all of the other shirts have. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a new shirt for the winter.

Vineyard Vines Fair Isle Boot Socks: Vineyard Vines new holiday line is to die for. I seriously want everything! The new socks are probably one of the best parts. I love these socks for their fun colors and cool design. I am really hoping to find a pair in my sock drawer soon.

Southern Proper Tartan Frat Hat: I have been eyeing up this hat for so long. It is so fall and wintery that it would be fun to have. It also has a cute pattern so it would be totally different than the hats I have now. The only issue is that I could only use it for about 2 months out of the year because it gets too cold where I live to wear a baseball hat instead of a winter hat.

Vineyard Vines Tartan Shep Shirt: This is probably the cutest shep shirt out there right now. I saw this in the new arrivals and I just am in love. The tartan on the back is just so cute. I also really like how it is white, because it is just so different then what I have (Navy) so I could wear it with a lot of different outfits. If I had this shirt I would probably end up wearing it all year even though it is a seasonal item.

Where to Get the Best Vest

Vests are one of the things that I consider as the most important accessories to have for the fall and winter. They are very versatile and can make an outfit look just a little nicer.

There are really two types of vests that are popular right now, fleece vests and puffer vests. The classic puffer vests are from J.Crew, and I would say that most people think of the Vineyard Vines fleece vest when they think of a fleece vest.

Based mainly on reviews and personal experiences I'll compare a couple different vests of each type to find the best vest. I will be focusing on price, ratings, and uses/colors.

For puffer vests the places I will be reviewing will be J.Crew, Old Navy, and  the North Face. For fleece vest, it will be Vineyard Vines, Columbia, and Patagonia.

J. Crew Quilted Down Vest

  • price: $120
  • rating: 4.7/5 (155 reviews)
  • Colors: Poppy, Navy, Black, Ivory, Sand, Moss, Brown
  • Personal: I have tried these one in stores. They seem to have a really good quality and they are a little puffier than the Old Navy one.
  • price: $35
  • rating: 4.6/5 (24 reviews)
  • colors: Canvas, Navy, Black, Bright Orange, Forest, Chambray, Red Check
  • Personal: I own two of these vests, and I really like them because they are thin so that they can go over everything without making the outfit super big. They aren't really warm but they work really well for a vest for only fashion.
  • price: $149
  • rating: 4.6/5 (52 reviews)
  • colors: Turquoise, floral, purple, galaxy, black, plum, silver, surf green
  • Personal: I have only seen these online.
  • price: $98
  • rating: 4.5/5 (37 Reviews)
  • colors: Navy, White, Light Blue
  • personal: I have seen it in stores at it is super soft.
  • price: $45
  • rating: 4.7/5 (177 reviews)
  • colors: Plum, Black, White, Grey, Purple, Emerald, Pomegranate, Light Blue, Navy/Grey
  • Personal: none

  • price: $99
  • Rating: 5/5 (2 reviews)
  • Colors: Birch White, Black, Green, Navy, Linen, Red
  • Personal: My friend owns this in black, and it looks really good on her, not boxy at all.

Overall, I would go with the Old Navy puffer vest if you just want something for fashion, but I would go with the J.Crew vest if you want something for both fashion and a little warmth. For the fleece vest, I recommend the Vineyard Vines vest because it looks the best and it is really soft.

Which one seems like the best one to you?

DIY Glitter Pumpkins

Pumpkins are the quintessential fall decoration. This pumpkin is even cuter than your everyday plain orange pumpkins. And what, may you ask makes this pumpkins better? Why glitter of course! It makes a fun decoration that add a little something to every area it occupies. I got the idea from this pinterest post. This was so easy to make, and with so little supplies needed, it makes the perfect decoration. So enough about how cute this is, here the instructions.

Materials:
  • Pumpkins (I chose a medium size)
  • Glitter
  •  Spoon
  • Spray adhesive or mod podge
  • Small paintbrush (if using mod podge)
  • Cardboard or newspaper
How to:

Get all of your supplies together so you don't forget anything.
Lay down the cardboard or newspaper so you don't make mess. I
used a broken down vineyard vines box for this. You also might want to think about making these outside because it does make a considerable amount of a mess.

Grab your pumpkin and tape. Tape the stem of the pumpkin up so you don't get any glitter on it. It doesn't really matter what type of tape you use, just make sure that you can easily take it off when you're done.

Take the spray adhesive just spray it on the pumpkin where you want the glitter. It doesn't dry right away so you can spray the whole top right away or just do it in little sections.

Use the spoon to help control the amount of glitter you put on the pumpkin at a time. I didn't do to good of a job at the control part, but it did help me keep the glitter confined to the area I wanted it.

As you can see, glitter is all over the place so just fold up the paper and put the glitter back into the container so it isn't all wasted. My glitter is going into an old medicine container because it's our "mixed glitter" container.

Now the pumpkin is almost done, all you have to do is take off the tape and it's done!

It took me about 20 minutes to do this whole thing and it is totally worth it! This is probably the best pumpkin that I have made in a long time!

Happy Halloween!

Maddie
